step to get a policy outside of your employment. I personally have a term policy with a reputable agency and then I have some supplemental coverage (much smaller) with my employer. The term is a rate locked in place for 30 years while the employer policy fluctuates each year during open enrollment but our jobs are never guaranteed to be in place when life insurance is needed.

Also, I know this is morbid but I think it’s important to get a policy that covers suicide too. I didn’t realized the importance of that coverage when I was originally shopping for a policy but after some stories, I think it is worth having.
