If it is "for a BBQ" - I expect I'm probably going to get burgers and dogs.

"To have some BBQ" - I expect smoked meats.

Not necessarily. In my ward we have several of us with smokers. We've had some good parties (typically for he adults)

"A" barbecue = burgers, hot dogs and sausages. "Some" barbecue = ribs, brisket, etc.
