Both of my wife's parents died when she was very young.

And yet she has said MANY times that she's glad she has her problems rather than those she sees others dealing with.

There is definitely a level of fearing the unknown, combined with recognizing that while it's been difficult, we've typically survived our own problems (for the most part), in spite of them making life not easy.
