Sounds like a misunderstanding of the booster rule, if your in-laws were
bringing some random person, it might be a recruiting violation of the booster rules, but those don't apply if they are your family, and even then if you have a documented pre-existing relationship, you can still be a booster and do stuff like that and be fine.
A Grandfather cannot violate the booster rule as it is written with his own grandchild.
