In my experience, East Coast people get up early, but start working around 9

This is due to the lengthy and stressful commute (traffic for cars, biking and showering at work, or public transport/walking), these each make the work day start later. Throw all that out the window during covid when you can get up, but on a clean shirt and jump on zoom in the guest room of your house.
