Thinking through how players profiting off their likeness and image might affect
BYU. Are we just talking about merchandise and camps, or will players be in commercials? Could BYU TV run commercials where players are paid? In a NYT article a while back Utah ranked somewhere around 62nd for fan base size and second or third to last in the PAC12. They had like 350,000 fans compared to 700,000 BYU fans. Obviously Utah's fans are mostly local and BYU is more of a national fan base. What impact will this have on recruits that are deciding between Utah and BYU? The money that the BYU athletic department raised in 2020 is an indication of the loyalty and size of the BYU fan base. I can't help but think that this bodes well for BYU recruiting. It also bodes well for schools like USC, Texas, and Ohio State with their massive fan bases. I personally spend money on BYU gear and would like nothing more than to support individual players that represent the school well.
