Balance breeds contempt because a glossy 10-2/12-0 record trumps five or six 9-3/8-4 teams. It's why BSU in the old WAC was always getting kwan, why in the MWC it's hard for more than 2-3 teams to get votes. Balance hurts records. BYU joining a G5 just hurts everyone's chances in that league, including BYU.
From a recruiting point of view, the Honor Code is often a plus, the academics are top drawer and the eyeballs are everywhere because of ESPN and BYUtv. That makes BYU attractive to the Big12 or as an independent with a lot of scheduling flexibility. BYU is not that far off of becoming Notre Dame in terms of reputation and that' not a bad thing at all.
