Taiwan Semiconductor Manuf. now supplies 92% of the world's microchips
that fall on the highest end of the complexity scale including almost all of our smartphones. Samsung makes the rest.

It also makes 60% of the lesser sophisticated chips found in cars. The World's technology currently dependent on Taiwan's ability to crank out chips. Recently, Ford halted production on the mustang and other car manufacturers (like the Telluride) have not been readily available because of chip shortages. TSMC can't keep up and no one else has been able to foot the billions of up front costs to be able to manufacture them en bulk.

You could also say a big reason for TSMC's emergence was when Apple and Samsung traded major lawsuits a decade ago, and as a consequence, apple moved it's iphone production away from samsung to TSMC. Taiwan is currently a major technology bargaining chip.
