The ball could clip the bar as you pull it back down and go who knows where. A GK will also generally shift their balance forward as they secure a catch, which he couldn't really do there. It's really a super awkward position for him. He was trying to do the safest and correct thing, but just totally screwed it up. Must've blinked at the wrong second or something.
