I have seen tests first hand (during a CA hunter safety course) shooting into clear ballistic gelatin of both lead-free and lead ammunition. The lead free stayed in 1 piece and had a very nice and consistent parachute-like expansion. The lead projectile had small pieces break off and created an cloud of lead through the trajectory that would not be seen in the harvested meat but was obvious in the clear gelatin.
