My understanding is that they would have $7.5M in recapture penalty if he retired after this upcoming season, and Edmonton would get a $3.4M "credit" toward the cap if he didn't play for them in 2022-23. I'm not certain how that credit is calculated, but a planned retirement could have been something that was negotiated ahead of time in lieu of Chicago retaining salary. That would be a dumb move for Chicago, though, as they could have retained some salary and avoided a pretty significant recapture penalty by retaining say 20% of salary rather than sucking up the cap penalty.
