Some states allow for a minimum number of days that you must hit before the
income earned in that state will be taxed. Some states have reciprocity agreements with neighboring states that allow for income earned in one jurisdiction to be taxed in the other (i.e., Maryland has one with DC).

However, generally speaking, a state cannot tax you on your income of you don't live, work or provide services and good in that state.

They don't just get to decide they want to tax you.
