As was said above, that episode introduces the bad guy(s) for all future movies and starts to lay the groundwork for tying threads together with Dr Strange, Scarley Witch, Ant Man, Thor, etc plus, of course, Loki.

It's a pretty mind blowing episode and pretty incredible that they did it in a TV show instead of a movie.
