Coach Taylor was associate head coach before being named HC. This is the way..
This is how I think the first non-LDS HC of the football team would happen. I don't think BYU would ever just go hire an HC that doesn't have previous ties to the program, like Texas did with Sark, or Auburn did with Harsin. But if say, last season Kalani would have left to be HC at a P5, Grimes could/should have been given serious consideration to replace him. This is why I think diversity is important on the coaching staff. I don't hate the idea of the HC at BYU being a member of the church, but I do hate the idea that we only seriously consider members of the church for that role. It will be an important day in BYU football when we hire the first non-LDS. I've always thought that if the Church wants to use the football team and AD as a missionary tool, what better way to spread the message than with someone who hasn't been raised in it, hasn't been baptized into it, and actually sees it through the eyes that most of the rest of the world see it?

If there was an Amish school with a football team in FBS and it was only ever run by Amish folks, as an outsider it might be hard for me to look at that program as a legitimate, normal team. And when the Amish missionaries came knocking I'd think they just want me in their Amish world, because I know they only prefer to deal with Amish folks and I'd wonder why that is. BUT if that Amish football team had an LDS, Muslam, or Jewish football coach, I'd think they must be hiring the best coaches they can. And when that LDS, Muslam, or Jewish coach did an interview where he said "Dude, they are amazing! Amazing, knowledgeable fans! Great citizens! Yeah, there are some bad apples in there and some get into trouble, but I love it here!", all of a sudden that school doesn't seem that weird. It just seems like another school. And if I was a non-Amish athlete considering this Amish school, it would be much less intimidating.

Again, I have no problem with the Bronco, Crowton, Kalani, Pope, Rose, etc hires. They are capable coaches that likely would have gotten the opportunity to be head coach somewhere else at some point. I just can't wait until we finally break that silly "HC at BYU needs to be a card carrying.." barrier. We sell Coke at LES now. This is the logical next step.
