have we seen this movie before? Oh yeah, 2011, when they were flirting with the PAC-12.
If these reports are true, what a mess. This conference has always been so dysfunctional.
Maybe the 2 schools are trying to get more leverage in advance of the next media rights negotiation. Can’t imagine that would sit well with the other Big 12 schools.
If the revamped college football playoff takes the 6 highest ranked conference champions, I have a hard time seeing the upside to OU and Texas leaving the Big 12 when they have the best statistical chances of winning that conference. In the SEC, they are competing for a championship with several programs that are equal or better. So if this flirtation is serious, there must be some financial upside that is not obvious to many people.
On the positive side, if the Big 12's two best programs leave for the SEC, it leaves several quality Big 12 programs in a tiny conference and they would need to expand again--which opens the door for BYU to maybe squeeze their way in.
I can't go down the rabbit hole of expansion again, hoping BYU gets an invitation to a big league. I'm going to sit back and try not to care. Wake me up if something noteworthy actually happens.
