I would imagine the driving factor behind expansion this time around would be
maximizing CFP revenue - i.e. trying to make sure your league can get as many participants into the 12-team CFP as possible.
It's why a move to the SEC would be seen as a plausible move for them - as the SEC would have a large chunk of the at-large bids each year in the new playoff.
