I remember in 1988 I had been excited about the Ty Detmer (all-time leading Texas HS passing QB) signing with BYU, and he was not that great his first year. His first opportunity to play in the opener at Wyoming was abysmal. He went on to have a decent year when he played as a freshman. No one expected anything close to what happened with him the following three years. Covey almost beat out Detmer to start the year at QB in 1989 even. You just never know, so I would not put too much stock in a bad outing for a freshman guy recently returned from his mission when he played BYU last year.
