It both aligns and complicates. In for a penny, in for a pound.
They may have just decided that as long as there was going to be significant change in the FBS landscape, they might as well knock this out in the process.

In the political power play department, the SEC apparently has just beheaded another P5 conference, while adding to its own power structure two of the most powerful college football programs in the country.

They likely can make this a win-win for them because they simply have the political pull to do so.
