I see many problems with this entire thing, among them is the fact that 98% of these athletes are really not valuable.
Most teams have somewhere between 2-6 guys that fans really care to watch and who will one day make a living with the sport but the overwhelming majority of these players will never play any meaningful professional ball because most of them just aren’t that good.

The scholarships, free gear, travel, food etc… was always generous for a group of guys who had nothing better to do anyway.
