I know BYU fans like to take the spiteful view and laugh at Big 12, but Big 12 was not going to successfully mask their instability problems by adding quantity.

If teams have easy chance to go elsewhere and significantly increase their revenue, that will make the status quo instable regardless of how big a conference is.

Big 12 can now easily add BYU or a few G5 teams. Adding those teams a few years ago would have done nothing to keep OU and UT. If other Big 12 leftovers get a better offer from remaining P5 leagues, having more numbers now would not stop them from jumping ship.
