I think that's a great approach with kids, and I think the stresses and pressure put on kids these days, whether externally or by themselves, is a lot. Social media doesn't help.
However, if your son needs mental health break, and he is likely raised by loving, well-to-do parents, who want for nothing... I can only imagine the pressures a female US gymnast may feel. Especially considering Simone's specific story of abandonment, adoption, repeated sexual abuse, who knows what other type of abuse in the US gymnastics program, etc...
Since literally nobody in the world has been in her shoes with this experience, I feel that many on this board are being way too harsh on her. I, like you, could be wrong, but that's how I feel. She is indeed the GOAT, and I fully respect her decision to pull out based on her past experience (both upbringing and gymnastics prowess) and current training/incidents.
