I've never attended a Catholic school. However, it seems like Notre Dame requires its undergrads to take theology courses, there is a chapel in every dorm, and 85% of the students are Catholic. So, although it may be tolerant and friendly toward nonmembers (just like BYU), it's not just like a state school.
