I think they did
The Jazz' 2 biggest defensive issues vs the Clippers were

(1) Royce could guard either Kawhi or PG fairly effectively, but he couldn't guard both at the same time. Whichever he wasn't guarding had a field day (as did Mann in Kawhi's absence).

(2) Reggie Jackson embarrassed injured Spida game after game.

Conley is a better defender than Donovan and a healthy Donovan is a much better defender than the guy we saw in the playoffs. So problem 2 is solved in that way. And if it isn't, Forrest isn't a rookie now. He's a plus defender at PG who can now be used situationally.

Problem 1 is solved by Gay. Gay guards Kawhi, Royce guards PG. Problem solved!

For those saying we still need an elite wing defender, we have one: Royce. The problem was that he was defending too many 4s cuz he's tougher and stronger than JIngles and Bogey. That's why he was the #2 rebounder at 6'4".

For key situations, Gay solves that issue. Royce can go back to defending the other team's best wing in crunch time offense-defense substitutions. For those situations, the Jazz now have Royce/Gay on defense and Jingles/Bogey on offense. If everyone is healthy, it should be a really good setup.
