Hook 'em horns is done by extending the index and pinky fingers. The "Y" hand
sign is done by extending the thumb and the pinky, which also happens to be how one makes a "Y" in American Sign Language. Does that help to distinguish between the two?

BTW, I've watched the BYU-Utah game a couple of times and I didn't ever see anyone making the hook 'em horns symbol.
