It's not just loyalty, it's that none of Bronco's assistants seem to be in

demand outside of UVA. This is why I have moved on from the idea that Bronco must do well at UVA so that BYU has a deeper bench of coaches to go to when needed. That ship has sailed. Bronco's assistants do not seem to have developed all that much since they left BYU. Bigger paychecks, but a very one-trick pony feel to the whole staff. Nothing noteworthy or new.

The one I had the most hope for was KPop, I would have like to have seen what kind of coach he could have become had he been made the defensive coordinator from the get-go at UVA. Developed directly under Bronco, unfettered by the silliness that Howell brings to anything he touches. Unfortunately, I get the feeling that one's development will be stunted like Tiny Tim when Nick Howell is your boss.

Bronco was in a perfect position, he took a perennial losing program that lacked discipline and made them more or less respectable. There are few coaches as good as Bronco at doing that, it's his forte. However, I think we may be seeing a bit of the Peter Principle when it comes to taking that next step as a first-tier P5 coach. This is exacerbated by having really average assistant coaches. The decade-long joke of having a glorified high school assistant as your DC is the price of loyalty.

To me, Bronco will always be a great guy who did fantastic things for BYU, an elite defensive coordinator, and a good head coach. However, loyalty to a fault that eats into real development is an Achilles heel.
