That will tell you 90% of what your dog will be like. 5% training + 5% luck of the draw (for better or worse), and you've got your dog's temperament, health, aesthetics, etc.

One thing I would not do is adopt a shelter dog. I think it's great those people who do, but owning a dog has enough hassles already that I do not want to take on someone else's health and behavior problems due to poor breeding decisions and inadequate care. I might consider taking a dog from a friend if I knew that dog and they were being forced to give it up for allergies, an overseas move, or something similar.
