I was a young kid living in Orem. One of my father's best friends lived down the street, Garth Hall. Garth was an offensive coach for BYU until the end of the 1982 season (he had taken a job as the OC of Tulane in 1983), but was still close with Steve Young. Anyways, Steve was mulling over his draft options with the USFL offering a ton of money or being selected No. 1 in the NFL. Steve asked to meet with Garth to get his advice. Garth had already moved with his family and asked my dad if he and Steve could use our house to talk through things. So they met at my house to talk.
What I personally remember is not much. It was in the evening, late enough that I was in pajamas when they came to the door. I was about 4-5, but I remember Steve seemed huge when he came to the door. I remember he was in his letterman jacket and he and Garth went downstairs. I don't remember anything else.
What my dad told me later about his conversation with Garth was this: Steve explained the money on the table being offered by the USFL, which was an absurdly large amount ($40 million) for the time. Garth's response was something to the effect: "Take the money you idiot!"
