If you're flying to a hub city, you often can find pretty good deals where you stop early on your trip and don't connect. I've saved some money on flights. They'll cancel the rest of your itinerary though, so you have to buy one ways.

I don't think there's any reason to be concerned about getting punished by the airline unless you're doing this monthly or more.
