Gonzaga has been itching to go to the MWC anyways and Wichita... while the AAC used to be a really nice basketball conference, after the Big 12 and UCONN departures it will be:
- Tulsa
- SMU
- Memphis
- Tulane
- USF
- ECU
- Temple
- Wichita
Memphis has cachet and SMU has some recent success, but outside of that you fall back on some infrequent success by Tulsa and Temple. So if I were Wichita, and Gonzaga called with this proposal, I would absolutely listen. The MWC with Gonzaga and Wichita would probably be the #5 basketball conference, just ahead of the PAC 12.
If it's not Gonzaga/Wichita, then I would think it would be UTEP and maybe UTSA or North Texas? I would think that UTSA, North Texas, and Rice would want to stick together, so I'm not sold on this idea. I can't imagine the MWC would even consider a UTEP/NMSU expansion. UTSA has big vision though and they might consider it.
