It really depends on the case. I’ve had murder trials take 5 months or two days.
If just depends on the facts. Fortunately, most cases aren't murder cases, so they aren't that serious. Most are a week or two. If your son explains the situation to the judge, there's a good chance he'll be let out of jury service.
