I know people hate to hear that, but it's true over the last decade. By the same token, we beat Utah this year and it was because we were the better team, not because Utah took it for granted and BYU pulled out all the stops to win (which I've seen some Utes claiming). Frankly "we didn't really want it as much" is a pretty horrid excuse and I'm not sure why anyone would use it.

But let's look at how Utah compares to BYU victories in those seasons (using Sagarin ratings, and not including bowl matchups)

2010: Utah is #26. BYU's best win that season was #28 Washington
2011: Utah is #39. BYU's best win that season was #77 UCF.
2012: Utah is #61. BYU's best win that season was #19 Utah State, #46 Georgia Tech was also stronger than Utah
2013: Utah is #34. BYU's best win that season was #33 Texas
2014: Utah is #24. BYU's best win that season was #51 Virginia
2015: Utah is #24. BYU's best win that season was #38 Boise State
2016: Utah is #37. BYU's best win that season was #47 Mississippi St
2017: Utah is #35. BYU's best win that season was #118 UNLV (ouch)
2018: Utah is #23. BYU's best win that season was #25 Wisconsin
2019: Utah is #20. BYU's best win that season was #26 USC

So looking through that decade
Years BYU beat a team clearly better than Utah: 1 (2012, by far Utah's worst year, but we beat several who were better)
Years BYU beat a team about as good as Utah (+/-5): 3 (2010, 2013, 2018)
Years that BYU didn't beat ANY team on Utah's level: 6 (2011, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019)

It was absolutely a statistical oddity for them to get 9 straight, but even looking at our BEST wins, it's clear they've been a stronger program over the last decade. Admitting that (instead of hiding behind a claim that they just care more) is the first step towards fixing it - which I'm optimistic that we're now finally starting to do.
