The depth argument stems all the way back to Bronco as head coach and D-coordinator, then Howell as d-coordinator, then Kalani as HC while Detmer was the coordinator at fault, and finally the new at-fault coordinator Tuiaki.
It’s not an argument just this year. It’s been nearly every year the depth starts to fail and injuries collapse the team following a tough opening slate of P5’s. We don’t have the depth for the current P5-level early schedule, and a decade-long sample size as an Independent gives credence to that.
At some point, we have to realize after pointing fingers at Bronco, Howell, Detmer, Kalani, even Grimes, and then Tuiaki… maybe it’s time to start looking at the overall pattern and the most common denominator in where we fail. And that’s the depth, and a banged-up team struggling to cope with the number of tough early games.
We’ll be in a conference soon with the associated recruiting boost, and our hands were tied with these schedules as an Independent… but it’s a problem much bigger than any coach or coordinator, and goes much further back than Kalani and his staff.
