I had this happen after a rental in Ireland...
We rented a stick and the clutch blew before we could even get off the motorway.
Called and they replaced the car with a new rental. About 1 month later they called and said I owed $3500 for a new clutch. Told the guy to take a hike. Said they were going to charge card on file. I called AMEX and they said don't worry we won't let them. Never heard from Hertz again.
