Honestly, yeah, I think that's more effective
Pointing out the NFL players that they recognize the names and know the players will have more impact than bringing up what (to them) is ancient history.
Which honestly, is fair. Nobody believes SMU is good because of how highly rated they were in the 80s.
The thing that makes BYU better than SMU isn't their performance in the 80s when they were honestly pretty comparable. It's how they do now.
