I have found that sometimes I just tell them “my daughter has an athletic event
That is important to her and me at 3pm but I am happy to meet before or after.
The ones that fight that response are the ones you want to distance from anyway. Most people actually react with “very cool, I have a kids soccer game tomorrow too. Lets meet on Monday” or “understand, do you mind if we talk over the phone while you are driving”
