False. LaVell gave his assistants plenty of autonomy, and the jobs here became
Stepping stones to greater jobs for many, many of his coaches. You haven’t heard of Coach Edward’s coaching tree? After Scovil were guys like Tollner, Holmgren, Chow and on and on. I remember feeling like “oh, no, we can’t lose him; then the next coach stepped up and took over. I was there when Holmgren said at the beginning of the season he would change Scovil’s playbook to be more balanced. By the end of that season, he was out-Scoviling Scovil.

So many of the coaches during LaVell’s tenure went on to significant success, you couldn’t fairly compare recent coaching groups with them.
