That's a little misleading because back then, you also had to
Pay for ride tickets as well. The ride quality was ranked A - E. With the best, and most expensive being "E." That's where the phrase "E-ticket" comes from. That added to the cost significantly. But, yes, it was still cheaper back then.

The crowds are what makes Disneyland awful. I might go back if they found a price point that kept the crowds down

Demand for Disneyland tickets is very inelastic. Raise prices 10% and it only decreases demand by a couple % points.
