Honestly my guess is that she was more Mormon by culture than anything else

If you've lived in Utah, you know the type. They're LDS because everyone else is, but they never really engage or pay attention to the actual religion.

Not just in Utah - in California I had some 17 year old young men who vaguely recognized the name Joseph Smith but insisted they'd never heard of the first vision or the sacred grove (despite growing up in the church)

So strange. I grew up in SoCal and every single one of us knew about that stuff. Polygamy, priesthood restrictions, etc.
