Kalani learned under Whit, who turned down jobs at Penn State and USC, among others. Whit got paid plenty and was "the man" at Utah. Why go take over a dumpster fire? Whit has gotten paid a ton of money while building up good will at Utah, it would still take a lot to fire him. Kalani followed Anderson to Oregon State University and saw first hand what can happen when you move around without deep ties to the community.
Kalani has a very good thing going at BYU. I hope he would follow the Whit model (or Lavell of course).
