Want to know how bad BYU's defense is? They are 91st in "Stop Rate Standings"!
That is currently the worst ranking for any year of Tuiaki as a Defensive Coordinator.

Here is where BYU's defense nets out for this year:
Ranked #91
9 games (doesn't count FCS)
98 Drives
59.2% stop rate
2.32 points per drive

However you want to look at that, ranking 91st out of 130 teams is below average.

In 2020 BYU finished ranked 8th (I think we all know why)
2019 = 50th
2018 = 22nd
2017 = 85th

From The Athletic

"What is stop rate? Every defense in college football has the same goal on every drive: Get a stop and get off the field. It’s the most basic measurement of whether a defense is successful, and the successful ones tend to win a lot of games.

Stop rate is the percentage of a defense’s drives that end in punts, turnovers or a turnover on downs. This simple metric can offer a more accurate reflection of a defense’s effectiveness in today’s faster-tempo game than yards per game or even points per game. We’ve been tracking this for each of the past four seasons (here’s 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017) along with each defense’s points per drive average."

The goal of the defense is to get stops. This year the defense is well below average in getting stops. I have been a critic of Tuiaki and his defensive scheme. But to be fair, he seems to be up and down. I wish they had stats for 2016 so we could see the full picture. What's concerning is that we are currently ranked worse this year than during the horrid year of 2017.

It's been a very fun year for BYU sports. I've really enjoyed this season. Not taking anything away from the great season that we have had. Hopefully the defense will change things up these last two games and improve their stop rating to at least get above the 2017 ranking.
