It wasn't that Barcelo was playing defense - it's the idea that Utah wants points with the clock stopped, and there's no reason for BYU to give it to them. Let them run the clock. I don't think he was thinking to give them easy points and play "part the Red Sea" defense as much as he was thinking play slightly looser defense so you aren't giving them a ft's and points with the clock stopped.
