I remember dealing with some of that growing up. I now live in Texas. When I
wear BYU stuff now I oftentimes get compliments from strangers about the program, or how awesome it was when Taysom beat up the Longhorns etc.. I even had a random dude give me a high five at the zoo the day of the Nebraska Mangum Miracle. I think it is a regional thing.
