You are dead wrong. Merchants rarely lift a finger to stop crime. The result of
those attitudes lead to what we have now and very little to do with online sales.

When my credit card was stolen, I was able to track down video footage of the people who used my info to buy gas 3 times. The gas station, Visa, and the bank didn't do anything about it. I didn't do anything about it because the money was just put back in my bank. The gas station lost $220 and didn't lift a finger.

Almost no one is interested in fighting theft cases from the police, government, or retailers. Amazon isn't any different.
