Couldn't agree more. Per previous comment - why can't the band play the fight song as fast as the recorded version they use before halftime? Why can't they prepare a new show every week?
In the 70s the band was ranked #4 in the country - we've fallen a long way.
There are people who know how to improve the band, but the music department frowns on this because they were jealous of the attention the band got - made up of ANYONE who wanted to be in the band. No scholarships. No incentives. Most were non-music majors. There were a few music majors, but mostly people who loved both athletics and music. And the halftime shows were incredible - a lot of variety. The basic preparation and halftime shows rival the other top bands in the country today.
Grant Elkington implemented changes that directors followed for years - then the music department fired the last director that used his methods and hired a low-brass specialist with no band experience and made him the new band director. Band died. Mission accomplished. Don't think the music department wants a repeat.
