I have a 2020 ranger with the tow package
I’ve towed my enclosed utility trailer with a side by side in it and that was all it could handle. I think you’d be pushing it towing anything over 4000 lbs and closer to 3000 is ideal

If you were towing a trailer with a Ford Ranger (7500 tow rating), what would you think the max dry weight should be?

Half, are you sure a ranger has a 7500 tow rating?

Yes, if it has the tow package, otherwise it's 3500

Then I would keep it around 3500 dry weight or half the rated weight

How far? roads (highway vs backroads)? traffic? flat or hills?

Wherever really. Have a F150. Looking at bumper pull trailer, but also going smaller with a truck

80% max loaded, so like 4,000 or 4,200 dry

is the 7500 a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating or the towing capacity of the Ranger?
