City planners have realized wide, straight, streets are actually poor design
They induce more traffic and lead to "stroads"... First it's helpful to explain a street should be low traffic, low speed, walkable/pedestrian-friendly for neighborhoods. Roads should be fast/efficient ways to get places. What we've created in many cities, and particularly here in Utah, is a whole bunch of stroads that are neither efficient roads for getting places, but neither are they low traffic, safe for pedestrians streets. They aren't inviting for pedestrian traffic to restaurants, businesses, and they aren't great places to live.
Utah's system of wide, straight streets makes this problem worse as people try to use these streets as through streets to drive places, and it turns them into stroads. Better city planning is to design some roads for efficient car traffic, then have narrower, curvy streets for neighborhoods that discourage car traffic.
