Second, and this is a bit complicated and political, but the Mannings are used to having a lot of control and influence in decisions at Ole Miss. This goes back to Peyton and Eli. Peyton went to UT because OM was on pretty heavy probation at the time, so that's understandable. When Tommy Tuberville left Ole Miss, some say, that the Mannings kind of held the athletic department hostage and said, David Cutcliffe will be the next head coach or else Eli goes elsewhere.  

Now, the Mannings are never super vocal about anything they do for Ole Miss, whether they support a decision or if they disapprove, but they definitely are used to having a voice with the decision-makers.

Archie Manning was an influential figure in hiring Hugh Freeze.  Archie backed the idea of Matt Luke being named the full-time coach.  Archie did not support hiring Lane Kiffin.
