Holy smokes. I finished my 1200 sq ft basement 3 years ago for like 20k. Granted
I did some of the work myself (framing, finish work, etc) but I saved the most money by finding my own subs.

We did 1000 sq. ft. for 35k last year. That included moving bathroom plumbing.
