Merlin chooses a tough guy to try to pull it out. Then when he fails they pick a little kid, and he can pull it up. Don’t know exactly what they do, but that’s how it goes.

I assumed from the story that the Ute fan was the tough guy chosen during Merlin’s shpeil, but I guess it could have been any time.
