I'm in a similar position but don't use a machine.
I'm 52 and 6'4" and needing to build/maintain upper body muscle. I play basketball and volleyball so legs are fine. I have a regimen of pushups, sit-ups/scrunches, chair dips and chin-ups/pull ups. I'm happy with how it's worked out.
